Important reminder about Village Green rules and legislation - 2021
Dear Nun Monkton residents
As you must have noticed, damage to the Village Green, has got much worse in recent months . In many places the Green is being seriously eroded by vehicle tyre tracks. It is possible that in the months ahead, money will have to be spent to repair the damage.
It is important to remember that no one has any right in law to park or drive on the Green. We therefore ask everyone to do whatever they can to help preserve the Green by not parking or driving on it - and also please ensure that all the access tracks are kept clear at all times to allow free movement of traffic without the need for anyone to deviate onto the Grass.
We realise that very occasionally (family occasions etc) it is necessary to park vehicles on the Green for a few hours - but only if there is no space for them on your property. Also “short term” vehicular access is accepted for unloading and for contractors to attend to essential repairs of properties.
May we also remind residents that if you wish to place anything on the Green (a skip for example), permission must be requested from the Parish Council in advance. This will not normally be given if you have space for the skip (or other item) within the curtilage of your property.
In summary, we ask that all residents use the land belonging to their own property for the parking of their vehicles and those of any visitors. We expect that all residents will co-operate in this matter. There is no way we can expect visitors to the village to abide by the regulations if residents themselves are ignoring them. The Parish Council has initiated police action for trespass on the Green previously and this remains an option in the future.
Nun Monkton is a village and civil parish in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire. Situated between Harrogate and York it is a cul-de-sac village 2 miles off the A59. It is at the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Nidd.
Most of the cottages and houses are grouped around a village green of some 20 acres (81,000 m2) with a duck pond and a maypole.
The village green continues to be grazed by cows and is one of the last working greens in Yorkshire. The maypole is 88 feet (27 metres) high, reportedly the tallest in England.
The ancient church has a claim to have the best stained glass in North or West Yorkshire.
Nun Monkton Foundation Primary School was inspected by Ofsted in June 2016 and judged to be good with outstanding features.
The Alice Hawthorn Inn was named after a famous racehorse of the 1840s and is a popular watering hole and restaurant for residents and visitors alike.
Nun Monkton ferry connects the village with Beningbrough on the other side of the River Ouse.
